The Past Is A Foreign Country - Gianrico Carofiglio
The action begins at a Christmas party in 1988. For a lot of people the Christmas holiday meant endless rounds of card games – for money. Giorgio, a bright young law student, is quite uncharacteristically involved in a brawl; he comes to the aid of Francesco, a casual acquaintance with a few friends in common who is deeply charismatic and well known around Bari, where this thriller is set.
Giorgio could never have anticipated how quickly he would be lured into an ever deepening abyss of easy money, easy women and ever more sinister activities. Every time his deepest instincts try to pull him back to normality, Francesco’s reasoned manipulation lures him further and further away into an almost sureal existance, destroying his relationships with his girlfriend and family, changing his beliefs and distorting his memories and outlook.
At the same time, recently appointed Lieutenant Chiti of the Carabinieri is struggling to find links between a series of brutal sex attacks across the city. He is plagued by feuding between the Police and his own Department, a crushing need to succeed, and at the same time put at rest his own ghosts which threaten to paralyse his abilities.
As the pulsating undercurrents of malevolence and excitement draw Giorgio deeper into the criminal underworld, it is obvious that these two storylines will intertwine at a point of no return for everyone. As a dreadful finale looms you will hold your breath, mesmerised with disbelief.
Gianrico Carofilgio is former anti-Mafia prosecutor based in Bari. When not writing he works as a consultant to a Parliamentary Commission investigating the Mafia. “The Past Is A Foreign Country” is the winner of the Premio Bancarella prize and is currently being made into a film.
