I was privileged to have been loaned a copy of Francesca Marciano’s book Casa Rossa and devoured it in three sittings.
Beginning in the Roaring 20s the women of the Strada family are tossed and thrown through the generations with suspicion, intrigue, hatred, betrayal and denial hovering in the shadows.
Puglia is the backdrop to this compelling story – the olive groves and rich red earth, the masseria, prickly pears and cicadas encompass vignettes of daily life for rich and poor and are the anchors for significant and destructive events; not just for one family - the sprit and history of a whole nation is bound and reflected in this volume as it unfolds. It is life in simple terms: raw and uncompromising filled with hope, love and despair, and fuelled by a need to survive. Casa Rossa, once home for happy memories, finally gives up its own truths and a broken family finally finds peace as the house is sold.
