Set in a Sicily during World War II, this is a story of lust, cruelty, the coming of age of a boy into a man, and the devastating consequence of war. The crushing impact these have on the lives of the main characters makes this an emotionally powerful film.
Malèna, played by the stunning Monica Bellucci, is the local beauty who turns heads whereever she goes. She is regarded as a threat by the other women of the town, whose husbands cannot conceal their lustful gazes. She is also the subject of fantasies of many an adolescent boy, including the maturing Renato (played by Giuseppe Sulfaro).
When news arrives that Malèna's husband has been killed in action, the local women's distaste for her takes a sinister turn as false allegations fly around of her being the town temptress. As the locals turn against her even her father disowns her.
The young Renato's adoration turns into an obsessive crush as he watches and follows her around. He witnesses the hostility dealt towards Malèna simply because of her striking beauty. Renato adopts a protective duty towards this beauty that he yearns for, believing he is the only one who knows the real Malèna.
Malèna's fight for survival, Renato's infatuation and maturation as he learns about lust, love and romance & a surprising twist make this a compelling film.
